The Basilica of San Miniato al Monte Gets the Exenia Treatment

Exenia and Lumenpulse luminaires were used to help preserve, highlight, and celebrate the art and historical architecture of the stunning Basilica of San Miniato al Monte in Florence, Italy. Thanks to lighting designers Massimo larussi and their use of Exenia Museo and Lumenpulse Lumeniris and Lumenbeam luminaires, the shadows that fall naturally throughout the architecture have been thoughtfully lit, openly inviting the eyes of visitors while still keeping the atmospheric awe intact.

The installation resulted in only the most minor of intrusions thanks to the use of the control protocol, Lumentalk. Lumentalk made it unnecessary to install additional data cables because it is capable of sending digital signals over the AC electrical wiring that was already in place. Lumentalk was paramount in preserving the historic architecture and helping to make the lighting design seem inherent to the space while still granting DMX/RDM digitally controlled fixtures.

"A great many attentive lighting schemes that are passionate about the context of each building — taking into account architecture, usages, history, as well as preservation — are using Exenia and Lumenpulse technology to respectfully light art, architecture, places of worship and other historic and culturally important buildings" says Anja Stolte, Lumenpulse Product Manager for EMEA & APAC. "It is our goal to make such lighting projects stand out from the rest and to create an enjoyable experience for everyone that comes into contact with these structures."

In both daylight and during the night, the luminaires work to compliment the architecture and art of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte without interfering with the structure and its innate shadow play. The outcome of such a design is that the austerity, and awe of such a monumental space stays intact while still allowing visitors, parishioners and clergy to move safely throughout.
